Agra
Sightseeing
Little needs to be said about the main reason for any tourist to visit Agra, the architectural wonder of the Taj Mahal. Built by Shah Jahan, the Taj is a white marble memorial to his beautiful wife Mumtaz Mahal. This monument took 22 years to be completed and was designed by the Persian architect Ustad Isa. Apart from its stunning design balance and perfect symmetry, the Taj is also noted particularly for its elegant domes, intricately carved screens and some of the best inlay work ever seen.
The TajMahal is open for visits 6 days a week, closed on Fridays, from sunrise till 7.30 pm.
Proceed for sightseeing to the Agra Fort. Built by the famed Mughal emperor Akbar in 1565 AD, the fort is predominantly made of red sandstone. Ensconced within is the picture perfect Pearl Mosque.
Also visit Itmadullah’s Tomb, built by empress Noor Jehan in memory of her father, the interiors of which by some are considered better than the Taj.
From Agra you can make an excursion to Sikandra. Or make a side trip to Fatehpur Sikri, a magnificent fortified ghost city (on the way from Agra to Jaipur)
Festivals
The Taj Mahotsav, held from February 18th to 27th, is a celebration one should not miss. The Sheetla fair, during July and August, is also worth attending as is the Kailash Fair, held in honor of Lord Shiva, during August and September.
