Bikaner

The strategic location of Bikaner on the ancient caravan routes that came from West/Central Asia made it a prime trade centre in those times. The magnificent forts and palaces, created with delicacy in redish-pink sandstone, bear testimony to its rich historical and architectural legacy. Surging lanes and colorful bazaars make Bikaner an interesting place to explore. Bikaner is an important centre for woodcarving and is most famous for its miniature paintings.

Sightseeing

Suraj Pol or the Sun Gate is the main entrance to Junagarh fort. Within the fort there are 37 palaces, of which Chandra Mahal, Phool Mahal and Karan Mahal are the most worthwhile to visit. The palaces, built in red sandstone and marble are ornate with mirror work, carvings and paintings. An array of kiosks and balconies embellishes the fort at intervals, breaking the monotony. A museum with valuable miniature paintings and rare antiques is also located at the fort.

Lalgarh Palace is a magnificent fort in red sandstone, a fascinating juxtaposition of the Oriental style and European luxury that leaves you truly mesmerized.

When you tour the city, you come across dyers dipping fabrics in huge vats to make exquisite tie and dye odhnis, while in the shadow of ruined fortresses the dyers dry hand-block printed fabrics.

While there, also don’t miss the fire dancers who keep their audiences enthralled as they tap-dance over red hot burning coal.

From Bikaner you can make excursions to the beautiful 16th century Bhandeshwar Jain temples. And don’t miss Deshnok to visit the Karniji Temple, the famous mouse temple. Go and see a camel breeding farm or Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary.

Festivals

The Camel Festival (Jan.) is the most famous one in Bikaner, where you can enjoy a camel procession, dancers, folk artists and music. The Camel Fair is a dazzling spectacle of camel performances and should not be missed when you are in the area. Kolayat Festival is a significant Hindu festival, celebrated on a auspicious date on a full moon night in the Hindu month of Kartik (winter). Akshya Tritya falls on a different date each year. On that day special food is being cooked and while all over India kites are flown on Makar Sankranti, in Bikaner they crowd the skies on Akshya Tritya day.
