Bundi
Bundi is one of the less explored cities, with a rich
historical wealth. Interesting monuments, including
impressive medieval forts, palaces,havelis, temples with
beautiful stone idols and chattris with carved pillars,
along with a picturesque lake in the heart of the town,
add to its charm. Bundi is very famous for its intricate
carvings and murals.
Sightseeing
Taragarh or The Star Fort is one of the most
impressive forts of Rajasthan. Perched on a thickly
wooded hill is a marvellous white fort with a huge
reservoir which once supplied water to the palace. The
Palace is a magnificent edifice and a fine example of
Rajput architecture, housing some of the superb Bundi
murals.
Visible from the Fort is the square artificial lake
of Nawal Sagar, broken up by islets. A temple dedicated
to Varuna, the Aryan God of water, stands half submerged
in the centre of the lake. The lake reflects the entire
city and its palaces, making it a unique attraction.
Don’t miss a visit to Raniji-ki-baori, a 46 meter
deep step well with some superb carvings on its pillars
and a high arched gate. This well is one of the largest
of its kind.
From Bundi you can visit Rameshwaram, cave temple of
Lord Shiva, Keshavraipatan, an ancient city famous for
the temple of Keshavraiji or Jait Sagar Lake, a
picturesque lake cradled in the hills, its swirling
fountain is a visual delight in the night. For a visit
to Ramgarh Sanctuary you will need to get permission
from the State Forest Dept. prior to your visit.
On the way to Udaipur you can visit Chittorgarh, it’s
dotted with imposing forts, graceful palaces and
spectacular chattris. The Fort is the indomitable pride
of Chittaur and perched on a 180 meter high hill, it
sprawls over 700 acres. The tablets and chattris within
are impressive reminders of Jaipur heroism. Rana
Kumbha’s Palace is the most massive monument in the
Fort. And don’t miss on Vijay Stambh, a 37 meters high
structure with nine storeys, covered with exquisite
sculptures of Hindi deities, Padmini’s Palace, Kumbha
Shyam Temple and Kalilka Mata Temple.
Festivals
Tejaji Fair (Sept./Oct.) is dedicated to the folk
deity Tejaji, when a large number of people gather to
take bamboo for their villages. The fair continues for 5
days. During Keshav Rai Patan Fair (Oct./Nov.) devotees
take a holy dip in the river and pray to the God Keshav
Rai Ji.
