Jaisalmer
This amber-hued city, also called the
Golden City, in the heart of the desert, dazzles
gloriously in the early morning. The sunset has a
peculiar glow here. As the night descends, the sky goes
up in flames, till it becomes black, a breathtaking
sight.
Jaisalmer is famous for its cobbled streets,
strewn with palaces, forts, temples and havelis. Every
house here is exquisitely carved, having filigreed work
all over. These houses date back to the 12th-15th
century.
Sightseeing
Jaisalmer Fort stands guard over the
desert scape from its 250 feet high perch on the hill
with its walls following the contours of the hills.
Witness the legendary architectural
wealth of Jaisalmer at Patwa Haveli, Nathmal Ki Haveli
and Salim Singh-ki-Haveli, truly unsurpassed in
splendour. Of particular note are the blue roof and rows
of peacocks below the arched balconies.
Gadsisar Lake is a rain water lake and many small shrines and temples are
festooned all around the lake. It’s an ideal picnic
spot, famous for boating.
From Jaisalmer you can make several
camel safari’s, for example to Sam Dunes to watch the
sun set, or make a longer camel ride and spend the night
in the desert in Sam or Kuri.
Festivals
The Desert Festival (Jan./Feb.) is
the most well known festival of Jaisalmer, held during 3
days. Basant Panchami (Jan./Feb.) is the ceremonial
welcome to spring time. Ram Navmi (March/Apr.)
celebrates the birth of Rama.
