Khajuraho
The town of Khajuraho is located in
the state of Madhya Pradesh and is one of the most
popular tourist destinations in India.
Sightseeing
Khajuraho has the largest group of
medieval Hindu and Jain temples, famous for their erotic
sculpture. The monuments have been listed as a UNESCO
World Heritage Site. The temples were built over a span
of 200 years, from 950 to 1150. At that time the
landscape setting was semi-desert and scrub. Now the
temples are set in a parkland landscape, resembling an
English public park with mown grass, rose beds and
ornamental trees.
Originally there were over 80 Hindu
temples, of which only 25 now stand in a reasonable
state of preservation. The temples serve as fine
examples of Indian architectural styles that have gained
popularity due to their explicit depiction of sexual
life during medieval times. These erotic carvings are
found only on the outside of the temples though, on some
10% of them. The rest depict the everyday life of
the common Indian of the time when the carvings were
made, and of various activities. They for example show
women putting on makeup, musicians, potters, farmers and
other folks.
Every evening the complex offers a
well made light and sound show, covering the history,
philosophy and the art of sculpting of these temples.
Festivals
The Khajuraho Festival of Dances,
held every year in February/March, draws the best
classical dancers in the country. As dusk falls the
temples are lit up and the finest exponents of different
classical Indian styles are represented – Kathak,
Bharatnatyam, Manipuri and many more.
