Orchha
Orchha, located in Madhya
Pradesh, lies on the Betwa river and was founded in the
16th century by the Bundela Rajput chieftain Rudra
Pratap Singh, who became its first King. In this
medieval city the palaces and temples built by its
Bundela rulers retain much of their pristine perfection.
Sightseeing
Orchha possesses an imposing fort,
which contains a number of palaces and other historic
buildings. The most noteworthy of these are the Raja
Rammandir, a massive square building of which the
exterior is almost absolutely plain, and the exquisite
Jehangir Mahal, a tiered palace of the same form but far
more ornate, crowned by graceful chattris and a
beautiful specimen of Hindu domestic architecture. From
here the view of soaring temple spires and cenotaphs, of
which there are fourteen in total, is spectacular.
In the Laxminarayan Temple and Raj
Mahal vibrant murals encompassing a variety of religious
and secular themes bring the walls and ceilings to rich
life. Chaturbhuj temple, built on a vast platform of
stone, is reached by a steep flight of steps and is
surely one of the most unusual in India. It is also the
only temple in India where Ram is worshipped as a king.
Those interested in outdoor activities can go for river
rafting or visit the national park.
