Pushkar
Though not a big city, rather a small
town, we don’t want to leave out Pushkar in our must see
places. It’s a pretty little town, surrounded by hills
on three sides. It’s one of the important places in
Rajasthan because it is one of the five ‘dhams’ or
pilgrimage centers for Hindus.
Sightseeing
While in Pushkar, pay a visit to the
Brahma temple, which is possibly the only temple
dedicated to Brahma in India.
Another interesting temple
is the Savitri temple, located on a hilltop. It takes
about an hour to reach the temple on foot, but it is
really worth a visit since the temple site offers a
breathtaking view of Pushkar lake. Many find the best
time to visit is at dawn to see the sun rise.
You can also visit the various ghats by the lake, which are
considered sacred.
From Pushkar you can make a trip to
Kishangarh, famous for its miniature paintings and local
crafts.
Pushkar is close to Ajmer, go and see the Dargah
there, one of India’s most important Muslim sites, and
pay a visit to Adhai-din-ka-jhonpra and Taragarh Fort.
Festivals
There is hardly anyone who has not
heard of the Pushkar Festival. It is held annually on
the 11th day of the bright half of the moon, in
October/November. During this time thousands of devotees
and holy man, coming from far off places, flock to
Pushkar to wash off their sins in Pushkar lake, which is
considered very sacred. The whole atmosphere is very
devotional and pious. As for the Cattle Fair, it’s a
beautiful celebration of the rural way of life.
Villagers, dressed in their traditional turbans and
colorful clothes, come to this fair with their cattle
from all over the state for trading. An interesting
event during this fair is the camel’s beauty contest!
