Shimla
Located in North-West Himalayas at an
altitude of 6,988 ft., the city of Shimla, draped in
forests of pine, rhododendron and oak, experiences
pleasant summers and cold, snowy winters. The city is
famous for its buildings styled in tudorbethan and
neo-gothic architecture, reminiscent of the colonial
era.
Sightseeing
Shimla has many temples and is often
visited by devotees from nearby towns and cities. The
Kali Bari temple, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali is
near the mall.
Jakhoo temple, for the Hindu god Hanuman,
is located at the highest point in Shimla.
Christ
church, situated on the ridge, is the second oldest
church in Northern India. It has a very majestic
appearance and inside there are stained glass windows
which represent faith, hope, charity, fortitude,
patience and humility.
From Shimla you can visit Sankat
Mochan, another Hanuman temple, which is famous for the
numerous monkeys that are always found in its vicinity.
Jakhu Hill, at a height of 8000 ft, is the highest peak
and offers a beautiful view of the town and the
snow-covered Himalayas.
16 Km from Shimla, in Kufri, the
winter sports capital, you can go skiing in winter.
Apart from skiing Kufri is a lovely picnic spot with a
beautiful view of the hills around and the snowy peaks.
Festivals
The Summer Festival, held in June, is
a memorable event when a variety of cultural programmes
and events take place. This event also provides a
glimpse to the visitors of the rich cultural heritage
spread throughout the state.
The most important event of
December in Shimla is the Ice Skating Carnival. Fancy
dress and other competitions and the grand finale of a
torchlight tattoo make it a marvelous occasion.
