Varanasi
Varanasi, the Holy city of India, is situated on the
left bank of the River Ganga and is one of the oldest
continually inhabited cities in the world. It is
regarded as holy by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. It is
one of the seven sacred cities for Hindus, one of the
four pilgrimage sites said to have been designated by
Gautama Buddha himself and for Jains believed to be the
birthplace of Parshvanatha. More than 1 million pilgrims
visit the city each year.
Sightseeing
Spiritual life in Varanasi revolves
around the ghats, of which there are nearly a hundred.
Most of the ghats are bathing ghats – Hindus believe
that bathing in the Ganga remits sins -, while others
are used as cremation sites, where bodies are cremated
in public. A dawn rowing boat ride along the Ganga to
view the ghats is a must to experience Varanasi in full.
The best time is from 5.30 am when it is cool, to see
the sun rise and light a lotus flower candle and set it
adrift on the water.
Other sights are the Kashi Vishwanath
Temple, also called the Golden Temple, a place of great
religious importance to Hindus, Durga Temple or Monkey
Temple visited by thousands of Hindu devotees during
Navratri and other auspicious occasions (non-Hindus
cannot enter the inner sanctum) and Sankat Mochan
Temple.
Varanasi is also a noted centre for
silk weaving and brassware. Fine silks and brocaded
fabrics, exquisite saris, brassware, jewellery,
woodcraft, carpets, wall hangings, lamp shades and masks
of Hindu and Buddhist deities are some of Varanasi’s
shopping attractions.
From Varanasi you can visit Sarnath,
one of the four important sites on the Buddhist circuit
(along with Bodhgaya, Kushinagar and Lumbini in Nepal).
It’s a green and peaceful place to spend some time to
see the Buddhist ruins and monasteries.
